THE PRYTANEION
This structure at the west end of the Basilica
dating back to the 3rd century BC. attained its
final shape under the reign of Emperor
Augustus.
In the free city of Ephesus it was a Municipal
building planned along with "Hestia Boulaia" a
temple in which the "Eternal Flame" of Ephesus
burned day and night for centuries.
This was a
place where political issues were debated and
religious ceremonies and reception parties held.
The structure consisted of 8 thick and tall Doric
columns in the facade, of which only two are
still main. Covered hall (Anta) behind it. At the
time the courtyard ground was paved with
mosaics ornate with Amazon shields and
passion flowers.
